Today I had a bit more of time than usual to dedicate to my editions, and thus I could create the third episode of my Christmas Carols arrangement streak.
A Virgin Unspotted
The third title of this year’s Christmas Collection is A Virgin Unspotted. Two versions of the music exist, but I decided I preferred the version adapted by Sir John Steiner (1840—1901). For the arrangements that include the voice, the words have been edited by Rev. Henry Ramsden Bramley (1833—1917).
This edition is offered in four variants: the original for SATB choir, then an arrangement by myself for High Voice and Piano, String Quartet, and Cello Quartet. The String Quartet version includes a part for third violin, in case a viola cannot be found.
The SATB and Voice-Piano versions keep the original F major key, but I found I was just unhappy with how it sounded with the strings. The classical String Quartet version has been transposed and edited to be played in A major, while the Cello Quartet will play in D major.
For both versions, bowing suggestions have been added, to make this edition buy-and-play. The Cello Quartet uses tenor clefs for the top two voices, and bass clef for the other two. Cello 2 is not difficult, while Cello 1 should be played by someone comfortable with the first seven positions and able to place the thumb on the home base of the half of the string.
